One of the toughest aspects of working from home is to make it clear to your coworkers that you are actually working.

Is it fair for us to account for every single minute or hour of our colleague's WFH days? After all, we do deserve a bit of flexibility right now.

What's wrong with walking during a conference call right? We do what we need to do for ourselves. However, we should be aware of the message we are sending to our coworkers. We don't want them to wonder what we do all day.

If you are guilty of the activities below, know that your coworkers ARE wondering what you are doing all day:

1. Taking a long time to reply to messages and emails.

If you are busy with a project, it makes sense that you cannot reply to every message inside your inbox every hour. However, if colleagues consistently find it hard to reach you, they will wonder what your problem is.

2. You're late and poorly prepared for virtual meetings.

Sometimes, your coworkers have to call you or send a message to make sure you will still attend the meeting.

3. You have a habit of scheduling meetings with your colleagues.

If you are a fan of meetings for the sake of meetings, it may cause your colleagues to wonder: "How do you have time for all these meetings?"

4. You have stopped coming up with new ideas or taking the initiative on new projects.

And if you are busy with a new project, it is because the company specifically delegated the work to you.

You might be busy, but if others don't know what you are doing, they might assume things.

5. Your calendar is always packed.

It makes sense for us to dedicate chunks of time to personal things, but we should be aware of the number of vague activities we add to our calendar. People will wonder if we are actually busy in the first place.

6. You share work results but only with your direct superior.

One way to leave your colleagues wondering what you do all day is by not broadly communicating the results of your work. It is best for you if both your boss and colleagues understand your contributions.

Make a point to share exciting findings and results through the work group chat, or ask your superior if you can have a few minutes of the next team meeting to describe your approach to a project.

7. You have stopped socialising with your coworkers virtually.

Colleagues are likelier to wonder what you do during work hours if they do not understand what your life looks like nowadays. Please do not keep them in the dark; make a point by staying friendly and communicative.

8. You always say how busy you are.

No one should feel busy at work all the time. If an employee experiences this, they need to meet the management. Everyone has busy periods, and it makes sense to comment about how busy you during those stretches.

But if "I'm very busy!" has become your catchphrase, everyone will wonder what is it exactly are you so busy with?
