98% of over 900,000 industrial workers vaccinated under PIKAS
Senior Minister of International Trade and Industry, Mohamed Azmin Ali, stated the programme had performed very well and helped facilitate the vaccination rates for Malaysians.
According to him, even though the Malaysian manufacturing sector's total workforce is about 2.2 million workers, some were vaccinated under the National Covid-19 Immunisation Programme (PICK) and on a 'walk-in' basis.
He said that over 98% of more than 900,000 scheduled had received the vaccine under PIKAS.
Azmin said MITI aimed to complete the vaccination for industrial workers under PIKAS by the end of September, and looking at current statistics, he was certain that it is achievable.
At the latest Cabinet meeting, the minister said he had asked the Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation (MOSTI) and the health ministry to increase the vaccine supply for PIKAS. Most of the vaccination centres (PPV) set up by companies face supply shortages.
He said that the MOSTI minister, Dr Adham Baba, assured him that the ministry would increase the vaccine supply for PIKAS starting September. He added that speeding up the immunisation process among industrial workers was crucial as the manufacturing industry was the backbone of Malaysia's economic growth.
"Unlike other sectors, industrial employees have to be on-site, they cannot work from home, so they are endangered to the likelihood of Covid-19 infection.
"That is why I want the industrial employees to be protected, provided attention and priority to get immunised so that they are safer and more secure not just health-wise but also so that we can increase Malaysia's productivity, " he said.

Over 48,000 workers vaccinated under RiVAC
Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs Deputy Minister Datuk Rosol Wahid said that 48,288 workers and traders were vaccinated under the Retail Industry Vaccination (RiVAC) programme across the country.
The deputy minister said 23,488 of them had gotten both doses of the Covid-19 vaccine.
He said that the ministry targeted to vaccinate 500,000 workers in the food and retail sector by the end of 2021 to allow them to open their restaurants and businesses, including for dine-in.
He added that the ministry understood that based on the vaccination numbers, it is slow compared to the goal. Still, it is discussing with large companies with many workers to carry out the RiVAC programme at their own premises.
He said that those in the retail sector or with very few workers could contact KPDNHEP for guidelines to speed up the immunisation process for their workers.
