The Ministry of International Trade and Industry (MITI) will not compromise if it finds any factories violate the Covid-19 standard operating procedures (SOP) as defined by the government.

MITI and the Ministry of Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs (KPDNHEP) are keeping an eye on the factories and will proceed to do so. They will also conduct surprise visits to ensure that the factories do not arbitrarily do as they like.

Various offences found during surprise visits

Yesterday, the MITI Covid-19 special task force was conducting spot checks in Shah Alam and found that a non-essential factory was operating during the movement control order (MCO 3.0).

When asked about the surprise visit, MITI said that the factory that produces finger sleeves switched its sub-sector to electrical and electronics. However, according to MITI, it had detected its fake registration when they arrived at the factory's location.

Consequently, MITI gave the company a compound offer of RM50,000 and forced it to close for 14 days. The factory had accepted it.

Senior Minister cum Miti Minister Datuk Seri Mohamed Azmin Ali led the visit alongside KPDNHEP Minister Datuk Seri Alexander Nanta Linggi. They were visiting factories in Shah Alam and Klang amid complaints about their non-compliance with the government's SOP.

Employers must ensure that the staff follows the SOP at all times.

MTI said that it immediately issued the offer of maximum compound and notice of premise closure to the factories.

Meanwhile, another company was slapped with a compound of RM10,000. MITI said that a supplier and three security guards did not use the MySejahtera app at the premise's point-of-entry.

MITI also visited a company that was previously ordered to close. The company, which reopened on June 3, 2021, had fully complied with the SOP during MITI's visit.

MITI reminded industry players to always adhere to the latest SOP issued by the National Security Council (NSC). According to MITI, the violation of the SOP will not only put companies at risk of being fined but could also cause death if a person contracted Covid-19.

The police and municipal councils are also conducting spot checks

The authorities found eight factories in Klang were operating without MITI's permission and ordered the closure of the premises.

North Klang district police chief ACP Nurulhuda Mohd Salleh said that the police and the Klang Municipal Council (MPK) have been carrying out Operation Pematuhan Covid 3.0 for two days since June 6.

According to her, four teams were assigned to focus on factories. They found that eight factories were operating without MITI's approval letter, and they were also not listed in the permitted sectors.

The police have issued 37 compounds to the owners and factory workers for failing to follow the SOP, which are:

  • Not providing temperature screening equipment,
  • Not wearing face masks, and
  • Presence of over 60% of workers on the premises.
