Bonus Aidilfitri, also known as Bantuan Khas Aidilfitri, is a special financial incentive given to employees in Malaysia to help them prepare for the Hari Raya Aidilfitri celebrations.

This practice is common among both public sector employers, though the amounts and eligibility criteria may vary.

What is Bonus Pesara?

Bonus Pesara refers to a special financial aid provided to retired government employees (pensioners) in Malaysia, typically as a gesture of appreciation for their past service.

In 2024, the Malaysian government announced a Bonus Pesara of RM250 for retired civil servants, including both pensioned and non-pensioned veterans.

This bonus is part of the government's initiative to support retirees, especially during festive seasons like Hari Raya Aidilfitri.

What is Bonus Aidilfitri?

Bonus Aidilfitri, also known as Bantuan Khas Kewangan Aidilfitri (BKKA), is a special financial assistance given to government employees in Malaysia ahead of the Hari Raya Aidilfitri celebration.

This initiative is intended to ease financial burdens and help civil servants prepare for the festivities.

In 2024, eligible government employees received RM500, while pensioners received RM250.

Eligibility for Public Sector Employees for Bonus Aidilfitri

The BKKA 2024 is applicable to public servants in Grade 56 and below, including contract staff. Eligible employees include:

  • Permanent and temporary employees
  • Contract of Service staff
  • Employees on full-pay, half-pay, or unpaid leave
  • Employees seconded or temporarily transferred to agencies with separate salary management
  • Interim teachers
  • Privately hired drivers for senior government officials
  • Personnel under the MySTEP program (provided they were appointed before April 5, 2024, and are still in service on that date)

Eligibility for Retirees for Bonus Pesara

Retirees are also entitled to the BKKA 2024, which extends financial aid to the following categories:

  • Government pensioners
  • Pension recipients (dependent beneficiaries)
  • Employees who retired under the EPF scheme at mandatory retirement age
  • Retirees who opted for early retirement but have yet to receive a pension
  • Veterans with and without a pension
  • Bonus Aidilfitri 2024 Payment Amount

The government has announced the following payment structure:

  • RM500 for all public servants in Grade 56 and below, including contract staff.
  • RM250 for government retirees and veterans, regardless of whether they receive a pension.

Payment Date for BKKA 2024

The Bonus Aidilfitri will be credited to eligible employees and retirees on Friday, April 5, 2024.

Bonus Aidilfitri in the Private Sector

Unlike the public sector, there is no legal requirement for private employers to provide a Bonus Aidilfitri.

However, many private companies in Malaysia offer bonuses as part of their employee benefits package. These bonuses can be:

  1. Fixed Bonus – A predetermined amount set by the company.
  2. Performance-Based Bonus – Calculated based on individual or company performance.
  3. Ex-Gratia Bonus – A goodwill payment given voluntarily by the employer.

How to Calculate Bonus Aidilfitri in the Private Sector

Employers in the private sector can determine Bonus Aidilfitri payments using different methods:

  • Fixed Amount: For example, RM500 per employee.
  • Percentage of Salary: 1-2 months' salary as a bonus.
  • Profit-Sharing: A portion of company profits distributed among employees.

Example Calculation:

If an employer decides to give a 1-month salary bonus:

  • Employee's monthly salary = RM3,000
  • Bonus Aidilfitri = RM3,000

If the employer offers a 5% bonus based on annual salary:

  • Annual salary = RM3,000 × 12 = RM36,000
  • Bonus = 5% × RM36,000 = RM1,800
