Single? Low income? Hard time finding a home? No more worries! Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) will provide you with an affordable micro housing facility.

Right now, DBKL is refurbishing an existing building along Jalan Tuanku Abdul Rahman. This building will be turned into a capsule hotel with residential units. The mayor of Kuala Lumpur, Datuk Nor Hisham Ahmad Dahlan said the housing scheme is aimed to help single people who belong in the B40 group.

According to the mayor, once they are married, they will no longer be eligible for micro housing. There would be 200 micro housing units for both men and women with a rental as low as RM100 per month. The building will be modified into two blocks, one for men and another for women with 120 rooms each.

However, the residents will not be allowed to cook within the building as they will only be provided with sleeping and bathing facilities. The renovation works have already begun two weeks ago and about RM5 million to RM 10 million has been invested into this initiative.

The mayor said that this is part of DBKL’s initiative to give back to society, just like free GoKL buses. All Malaysians can apply for this scheme. As for the rental fee and application method, these two will be finalised soon. This project is estimated to be completed by mid 2019. He also explained that if this initiative is a success, DBKL will expand it to other parts of Kuala Lumpur.

Nor Hisham pointed several issues that he would like to focus on in 2019, which includes over-development, traffic congestion, and the plight of the urban poor and homeless in the city.

The mayor hopes to make Kuala Lumpur a low-carbon and smart city where residents can enjoy high quality of life while also boosting the economy. Issues such as potholes, traffic congestion and flash floods need to be addressed immediately, he said.

Nor Hisham also said that development in Kuala Lumpur was 50% saturated with places such as Bangsar South and Mont Kiara filled with residential units and condominiums. He said DBKL were committed to preserving places such as KL Forest Eco Park and Taman Tugu.
