Hire NowAs we all know, most employees nowadays are keeping their social media profiles clean. Employers often check out job candidates' social media profiles to learn more about them.
But this phenomenon goes both ways. Potential employees also check out the employers' social media profiles to see if they're compatible. Remember, once you have a social media profile, it will be open to the public, which includes employers, employees, and job candidates.
Always mind what you post on your social media profile.
If you're an employer, you want to represent your company on a personal level. You cannot afford to post unsuitable content on your social media accounts as it will affect your standing with other companies, employees, as well as job candidates. Here are the top five ways to make sure that social media will not ruin your career:
1. Do not rant about work
It's normal to be frustrated at work, and, understandably, you need a place to vent your feelings about it. But venting on social media is not the way to go. What will your colleagues or employees feel if they see you complain about them on LinkedIn?
Some things are better done internally and privately, and ranting about work is one of them. If you want to write a post about employees or colleagues, make sure it stays positive!
2. Keep private matters private
People love to share their photos online. You should know, however, that there is an unwritten etiquette to sharing pictures: Make sure it's appropriate. For example, you should not post your personal beach holiday photos on your LinkedIn profile. Some things are better off private. Your employees and other professionals do not need to see the intimate side of your life.
3. NEVER share inappropriate content
It's so easy to share posts on social media, with just one click, all your followers will see your shared post. There is a lot of hilarious content on social sites, but nowadays, it is not easy to find out the difference between a good banter from an insult.
So, bear in mind who will see your content. If you're still not sure, think: "Would I feel embarrassed if my mother sees this?". It's simple, just a quick thought process before you click that share button could save you a lot of future trouble.
It would be wise not to touch anything about politics, and if you do, make sure it's thoughtful.
4) Keep it casual and non-political
If you are an experienced professional, your followers would love to learn more about your philosophy and knowledge. Many experts on LinkedIn gather a lot of followers through their thoughts and opinions, but they also know what to write about.
In Malaysia, talking about politics is a recipe for disaster. Just make your conversation topics casual or strictly professional; you do not want to be seen as a red flag to other professionals and job candidates.
5) Don't get into dramas
Finally, try not to get into dramas. You might come across controversial posts meant to stir the pot. Be wise and do not fall for it. These posts are specially made to make people angry.
Social media is a very tricky thing that could turn your career upside down in a matter of minutes. Mind what you post, follow the right people and you will do just fine.
