Hire NowIf you're a business owner, registering as an Employees' Provident Fund (EPF) employer is an important step to take. It ensures you're complying with labour law and helps provide financial security for your employees — both you and your employees contribute to a fund they can access on retirement or under certain conditions. This guide walks through the registration process step by step, organised by the type of employer you are, since the required documents differ slightly across categories.
Who Needs to Register, and By When?
Under the EPF Act 1991, an employer must register with EPF within 7 days of becoming liable to contribute — which is as soon as you hire your first employee. This applies regardless of which category below you fall under.

After You Register: Setting Up i-Akaun
Beyond employer registration itself, you'll also need to register as a user of i-Akaun to facilitate online contribution payments. This is what you'll use every month to submit Form A and pay employee and employer contributions without visiting an EPF counter. For the full activation walkthrough, see KWSP i-Akaun (Employer): What It Is and How to Register.
Don't Forget Your Other Statutory Registrations
EPF is one of several mandatory registrations for a new employer in Malaysia — you'll also need to register with SOCSO, EIS, and LHDN within their respective deadlines. Our guide to EPF, SOCSO, EIS, and LHDN Employer Registration for Malaysian Companies walks through all four together, which is worth a look if this is your first time hiring.
If your workforce includes foreign employees, note that EPF contributions became mandatory for eligible foreign workers from 1 October 2025 — see Do Employers Need to Pay EPF for Foreign Workers in Malaysia? if this applies to your team. Once you're registered and contributing, our guide on EPF Employer Responsibilities in Malaysia covers the ongoing obligations that follow registration — monthly contributions, record-keeping, and compliance.
