Before you register a company in Malaysia, you need to make sure your business name is available and secured.

This is where Form 13A plays an important role.

Submitting Form 13A to SSM helps you reserve your preferred company name while you complete the rest of the registration process.

In this article, we’ll explain what Form 13A is, who needs it, and how you can submit it easily.

What is Form 13A in SSM?

Form 13A is the official application form used to reserve a business or company name with the Companies Commission of Malaysia (SSM).

It is the first step before you can officially incorporate your business, whether you are starting a Sole Proprietorship, Partnership, or a Private Limited Company (Sdn Bhd).

Filing Form 13A helps you secure the rights to your desired business name, making sure no one else can use it while you complete your company setup.

It is a way to "lock in" the name while you prepare your next documents.

Who Should Use Form 13A?

Form 13A is not just for big companies. Any business owner planning to register a company should use it. This includes:

  • Entrepreneurs registering a new business

  • Recruiters or HR professionals setting up a recruitment agency

  • Existing businesses that want to rebrand or change their current company name

It applies across different company types: sole proprietorships, partnerships, and Sdn Bhd.

How to Complete Form 13A

Completing Form 13A is quite straightforward if you know what information is needed. Below is the steps on how to complete the form:

  • Prepare at least three proposed names in case your first choice is rejected.

  • Fill in the nature of business you plan to do.

  • Provide the details of the applicant, such as your name, IC/passport number, and contact information.

  • Make sure your spelling and information are accurate, because even a small mistake could delay your application.

An example: If you want to register a new recruitment company, your proposed names might be "TalentFirst Sdn Bhd," "NextGen Talent Sdn Bhd," and "BrightHire Sdn Bhd."

Where to Submit Form 13A

You have two options to submit Form 13A:

  • Online through the MyCoID 2016 portal, which is fast and convenient.

  • Over the counter at any SSM office branch if you prefer to submit manually.

Each name submission costs RM50. If you submit three names, you need to pay RM150. Processing usually takes about 1 to 3 working days.

SSM Name Search Guidelines

SSM follows certain rules when approving business names:

  • The name must not be misleading, offensive, or too similar to an existing company.

  • Words like "Royal," "Bank," "Government," or anything religious/sensitive are restricted.

  • You may need special approval if your name involves restricted words.

Many applications are rejected because the name is too general, similar to another company, or uses restricted terms without permission.

To improve your chances, choose unique and clear names related to your business.

What Happens After Submission?

Once you submit Form 13A, SSM will review it.

  • If approved, you will receive a "name reservation" notice.

  • The reserved name is valid for 30 days.

  • If rejected, you will need to propose a new name or appeal with supporting documents.

It’s a good idea to check the status regularly through the MyCoID portal or by contacting the SSM office.

What’s Next After Name Approval?

After your business name is approved, you can move forward with:

Name reservation is only the beginning. You must complete the full registration within the reserved period to secure your company.
