COVID-19 National Immunisation Programme coordinating minister Khairy Jamaluddin says that a vaccination programme for industries that stay open during the Movement Control Order (MCO) will begin soon. This programme will also include these industries' foreign workers.

Khairy said he would announce the details of the programme next week.

At his weekly media briefing with Health Minister Datuk Seri Dr Adham Baba, he said that the programme would prioritise industries that are operational during the MCO.

He added that the programme would cover foreign workers employed in the essential industries.

"The foreign workers will be given vaccinations simultaneously as Malaysian workers employed in these industries," he stated.

On May 28, the government declared a nationwide total lockdown that begins today.

It allowed only 17 essential sectors to operate, including:

  • Energy,
  • Waste management and public cleaning,

Vaccine registration increased

The minister also said that 12,117,091, or almost 50% of Malaysia's population 18 years and above, had registered for the national vaccination programme.

Currently, 2,913,009 of the population have undergone vaccination, and 1,052,145 of them had completed both doses.

As of May 31, 3, 871,725 people had signed up under the second phase of the national vaccination programme.

Khairy stated the number of people who signed up increased after the number of cases went up.

He said that the public has become more aware of the situation to get the vaccines to protect themselves. He also said that the government would boost vaccinations and expedite the process to address the people's concerns.

Why people did not show up for vaccination appointments

Khairy said there were reasons why people did not show up for their vaccination appointments, such as:

  • Transport issues, and
  • A lackadaisical attitude, assuming they could get vaccinated later even if they missed the appointment.

He said that the ministry would hand over waiting lists to the state and district health offices so the vaccines would not be wasted due to no-shows. According to him, this way, these offices can either call those on the waiting list or call those with appointments earlier to remind them to show up.

Why some applicants received appointment locations far away

Khairy addressed why some certain vaccine applicants received their appointments at other locations far from where they live. He explained that MySejahtera users have been using the Google Maps API for their address fields.

"For example, someone types 'Taman Bahagia' and all the (residences named) 'Taman Bahagia' in Malaysia show up as suggestions on the Google Maps API.

He said the users might have clicked on the first Taman Bahagia that showed up. As a result, they are sent to Taman Bahagia in Sandakan, Sabah.

He asked the users to update their address fields so they can minimise the problem.
