On a Sunday evening, you're lounging on the couch, thinking back on the wonderful weekend you just had with friends and family, when all of a sudden, the thought that you have to go back to work the next day crosses your mind.

There is such a thing as the Sunday blues. How can you really get past them?

The Sunday blues? What is that?

Health psychologist Dr Marny Lishman said that the Sunday blues could result in "hopelessness, apathy and irritability, as well as depression and insomnia".

This emotion can affect anyone, whether you're a CEO or an intern. It can be influenced by a variety of things, such as stress brought on by rising demands and concerns about work performance, as well as the difficulty to detach brought on by remote working.

Even those who enjoy their jobs sometimes experience dread about Mondays, but there are several things you can do to combat the Sunday blues:

1. Prepare everything on Friday

Try to finish any loose ends Friday before you leave the office. Make a to-do list for Monday and clean up your desk, so you know precisely what must be done when you return to work.

By planning ahead, you can enjoy the weekend without stressing about the following week.

2. Take a moment to unwind

Use Sunday evenings to relax and unwind in addition to having fun. This will help you feel refreshed and prepared for the next week.

Try taking a calming bath, reading a nice book, or listening to music. You're less likely to become anxious about upcoming work if you establish reasonable boundaries and take pleasure in your free time.

3. Savour some break from work

It's crucial to be able to rest and recharge, even though it might occasionally be difficult to disconnect from work entirely.

Take the French work approach, where workers have earned the legal right to refrain from checking emails after hours to help prevent burnout.

4. Complete your errands on Saturday

Do you save all of your tedious tasks until Sunday? Paying your bills, doing your laundry, and shopping for groceries before you return to work might cause stress; instead, complete these tasks at the beginning of the weekend.

5. Take advantage of your Sundays

Spend your time having fun rather than worrying about the coming week. Visit a new location, meet up with friends, go shopping, or go for a dine.

Running or doing yoga are excellent forms of exercise that release "feel-good" endorphins and lower anxiety.

6. Maybe it's time for a change

Have you thought about the possibility that your work is the cause of these feelings if you're still having a hard time getting over your Sunday blues? It could be time for a shift if this is the case.

7. Recognise and understand your Sunday blues

It's equally critical to comprehend the underlying reason for your feelings.

If your only concerns are an unpleasant activity you have planned or a deadline you need to accomplish, all of these are things you can change.

8. Try to look forward to something

Who says you can only have fun on the weekends? Establish a healthy work-life balance so you can take advantage of your downtime during the week.

Plan tiny treats you can look forward to, like a quick dinner with a friend after work or a lunchtime chat with a coworker.

9. Get your much-needed rest

Mondays are dreaded by many people because they can make you feel exhausted and depleted. However, this might result from all those weekend lazy lie-ins that messed with your biological clock.

Try to maintain a regular wake-up and bedtime each day, and ensure you receive enough rest so you can start the week feeling rested.

10. Engage in positive thinking exercises

What actual benefit is there in dreading Monday? No matter how you feel, Monday will still come and go. So, make an effort to think optimistically!

Consider all the things you had pleasure in during the weekend, what you have planned for the following weekend, and what you will take pleasure in this coming week at work.
