Hire NowIf you believe that leadership is a learnable skill, then you have come to the right article. After all, when a person operates consciously in a working environment, they learn more about being a leader and many leadership styles.
Even if they do not manage anyone, every time they are on a project or just helping a new employee, they are fine-tuning their leadership skills. When you manage a team, you are improving your role every time you communicate with them, especially in an environment where feedback is crucial.
But how do you and your manager know when you are ready to become a leader? You will need to pass these five tests for them to see you as a leader:
1. Presenting in front of the decision-makers
If you want to be seen as a potential leader, you must ace a presentation in front of the decision-makers. Apart from public speaking, you also need to ensure that the content of your presentation is rock solid. You must also be able to answer questions from your superiors and those who are below you in the chain of command. It would also help to create professional-looking slides.
2. Manage criticism of your work
Though there are some places where no one dares to criticise the leader, most leaders face criticisms for their judgement every day. One leadership material is to manage public criticism of your work in a respectful, productive, yet firm way. You may face this test in various ways, such as:
- A critical comment during a presentation, or
- An email reply to a proposal.
Whenever you receive criticism, it's a chance to show that you can manage critique and learn from it at the same time.
3. Solving a business problem
Business problems happen all the time. Leaders always have to come up with innovative solutions to solve these problems. Another leadership test is to be proactive about searching for strategic and scalable answers to questions within your company and implement those answers.
You should always find better ways to do things and consult with the decision-makers who could implement your solutions.
A good leader knows how to identify their team members' strengths.
4. Recognising your team member's skills
A great leader recognises every strength possessed by the members of their team. You have to show that you can identify other people's strengths and allocate resources based on your insights.
It is wise to encourage junior team members to assist with tasks when you know it matches their strengths and interests. It is also a good idea to pick projects that match your own ability while encourage your teammates to choose projects based on their abilities.
Finally, it would be best to let the decision-makers know when the company should celebrate a team member's strengths with a new responsibility.
5. Communicate your displeasure
When a good leader does not agree with someone, they do not just roll over. Their strong opinions are equipped with facts, data and expertise. A good leader makes these opinions heard for the organisation's sake.
To be a potential leader, you must prove that you can have tough conversations with the decision-makers, even if it makes you uncomfortable.
It would help if you were voicing your opinions in meetings, sharing your opinions on new projects and processes, and point out when the company could have done something in a better way. All of these traits show true leadership potential.
