Google has one of the most prestigious internship programs in the world, but this year's interns will not be able to enjoy the perks at Google campus as the entire program goes virtual. Due to the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, The company will be having a virtual internship program instead.

As most of the regular session replaced with digital versions, candidates will be able to attend everything remotely. The leadership team at Google intends to host virtual versions of its training sessions, and interns will be able to attend various networking events online.

Unfortunately, the 2020’s interns will not be able to make use of the facilities they have at Google, such as games rooms, free food, or campus bicycles. But all of Google's internship programs will move forward in the online format and the interns will still be compensated.

Interns will instead take part in virtual replications of the company's usual internship events.

Confirming the changes in a statement, a Google spokesperson said: "As the COVID-19 outbreak develops, we are doing everything we can to keep our Google community safe and informed. With new public health advice, travel restrictions, and shelter-in-place orders being implemented across the globe, we've made the decision to make Google internship program virtual."

The spokesperson also said that Google receives thousands of interns each summer, and the company will get in touch with successful applicants to detail the logistics of the virtual program.

It is not an easy task to gain an internship at Google. For example, if a candidate wishes to land a spot on its User Experience (UX) program, they will need to pass several rounds of interviews, a portfolio review, and a design challenge.

Other companies, such as Yelp, have cancelled their internship programs due to the coronavirus pandemic. Many candidates of the Google internship program, including those had already received a written offer, were concerned that the company might also end up cancelling the internship.

Meanwhile, Google’s recruitment process has also moved entirely online as it continues to hire new employees. These new employees will also receive their company laptops through delivery. The company will also extend the contracts of temporary workers whose contracts were set to end during the coronavirus pandemic.
