Hire NowHealth director-general Tan Sri Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah said that the upward trend of Covid-19 workplace infections lately has been worrying.
He stated in only two months, a sum of 287 clusters had risen after 17,087 people were found to have contracted the disease.
This finding was based on data recorded from April 1 until May 26 2021. The data also revealed that 233 workplace clusters (involving 16,785 people) were still active.
In yesterday's statement, he stated the top three states with the highest amount of clusters:
- Selangor with 74 clusters,
- Johor with 53 clusters, and
- Penang with 31.
Manufacturing sector leads the workplace clusters
In-depth research on workplace sub-categories found that the manufacturing sector recorded the highest count with 132 clusters within the same timeline. The services sector came in second with 57 clusters, he added.
From January 25 2020, until May 26 2021, the Ministry of Health (KKM) had logged an overall 1,085 workplace clusters with 129,322 cases.
Dr Noor Hisham said that despite the implementation of the third Movement Control Order from May 12, there had not been a significant decrease in workplace clusters.
Between May 12 and May 26 this year, KKM reported that there were up to 115 workplace clusters with 5,392 infections. He said that half of the clusters involved the manufacturing sectors, with 62 clusters.
Safe@Work
He said that the KKM welcomes the International Trade and Industry Ministry's action to introduce the new Standard Operating Procedures (SOP) called Safe@Work. The Safe@Work program balances between the continuity of manufacturing operations and the containment of Covid-19 infection.
He said that the Safe@Work program is accomplished by setting up the Covid-19 emergency teams by companies, the regular sanitisation of premises, and providing safe and comfortable accommodation for workers.
Staff are reminded to abide by the SOPs.
Keep the facilities clean and safe
Dr Noor Hisham advised employers to ensure that they:
- Provide hand sanitisers and hand washing areas,
- Use face masks,
- Implement physical distancing of at least 1m between people at work and dining spaces, and
- Deter any gathering in confined areas.
When it comes to avoiding possible Covid-19 infection at workers accommodations, he urged employers to:
- Make sure to separate the beds at least one to two metres apart,
- Avoid the preparation of food at these premises,
- Disallow eating in groups, and
- Ensure that leisure areas are not crowded.
The director-general also reminded workers to abide by the SOP by:
- Avoid close conversation,
- Wearing face masks,
- Immediately report any symptoms to employers, and
- Refrain from going to work to reduce the chance of spreading the virus.
