Putrajaya Remove All Political Appointees in GLC

The contracts of political appointees at all Federal statutory bodies and government-affiliated corporations will be terminated immediately.

In a communication to all ministry chief secretaries, Government Chief Secretary Tan Sri Mohd Zuki Ali stated that the direction must be implemented without delay.

The circular dated Wednesday (December 14) stated, "In a meeting on December 14, the Cabinet decided that the political appointments of the chairmen and board members of Federal statutory bodies, finance minister companies (incorporated), government-related companies, and government-related investment companies should be terminated immediately".

Several high-ranking civil workers, including the former director-general of the Public Service Department, Datuk Seri Mohd Shafiq Abdullah, were earlier terminated by the Pakatan Harapan government.

Sources told theStar that the decision was made after a lengthy conversation with ministers who admitted that some political appointees were competent and able to function and how to distinguish them from those who were not.

According to a source, "It was ultimately agreed that a blanket decision would be made to end political appointments."

However, when contacted, some ministers stated that Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim should be granted discretionary authority to select new appointments.
