Hire NowThe function of human resources (HR) has been growing for some time. HR is the source of expertise on people issues in an organisation. HR's roles enable organisations to maximise the contribution of employees in achieving the organisation's goals.
HR is now a strategic partner with the leaders of the organisation to contribute to significant business decisions, advise on transitions, and development of employees. In short, HR is there to formulate policy and practice on people issues.
These are the primary roles of human resources in any organisations:
1. Strategic partner
The HR staff contributes to the development of and the accomplishment of the organisation-wide business plan and goals. The goals of HR are established to support the achievement of the overall strategic business plan and goals.
When HR managers are aligned with the business, the personnel part of the organisation becomes a strategic contributor to success.
2. Handle compensation and benefits
The compensation and benefits functions are usually managed by one HR specialist with multiple expertise. On the compensation side, the HR roles include setting compensation structures and estimating competitive pay practices.
Payroll can be a part of the compensation and benefits section of HR; but, in many cases, companies outsource such administrative functions.
3. Responsible for employees' training
Training employee is essential to help the new hires get acquainted with the organisation’s work pattern. The HR department must organise a training program for every new employee based on the skill set required for their job.
It will further also add to employee motivation and retention. This training will not only help the employees but also give the HR team an insight into the employees' craft. HR also plays a significant role in evaluating the results of the training program and rating employees.
The role of HR is still important and relevant in today's age.
4. Advocate for employees
As an employee advocate, the HR manager plays an indispensable role in organisational success through their knowledge about the advocacy of employees. This advocacy involves expertise in how to create a work environment in which employees will choose to be motivated, contributing, and happy.
Promoting effective methods of goal setting, communication and empowerment through responsibility fosters employee ownership of the organisation. The HR manager helps build the organisational culture in which employees have the competency, concern, and commitment to serve clients well.
5. Focus on compliance
Compliance with labour and employment laws is a major HR role. Noncompliance can result in workplace issues such as:
- unsafe working conditions unfair employment practices,
- unfair employment practices and
- general dissatisfaction with working conditions.
All of these can affect productivity and ultimately, profitability. HR staff must be aware of employment and labour laws.
6. Develop employees
Developing your employees is a bonus for the employees as well as the organisation. Sending employees to attend conferences, trade shows, seminars that may be in their interest will make them feel cared for and a vital member of the organisation, thus increasing employee engagement.
It will also be helpful to the organisation by way of the employee’s added skill set. It is the HR manager's job to get to know the employees and look for opportunities that will help improve themselves.
7. Resolve disputes
In a workplace where everyone has their own views, conflicts are almost unavoidable. Whether the conflict is among two or more employees or between the employee and the management, an HR manager has the right to mediate and help plan out a solution.
The HR should be available at the disposal of the clashing parties and hear out their issues without being judgmental.
These are the seven primary duties of the Human Resource Department in today's world. Back then, HR might be known for payroll, but now that automation has taken over, there are new areas of HR professionals to discover and focus on.
