Hire NowThe authorities should carry out surprise inspections at workplaces more often to ensure that employers follow standard operating procedures (SOPs) to curb the spread of Covid-19 infection.
Malay Consumers Association Malaysia (PPMM) President Che Johan Che Hassan said that these spot checks are necessary due to the increasing Covid-19 cases with new workplace clusters showing up every day.
According to him, the Ministry of Health Malaysia (MOH), the Department of Labour (JTK) and the Royal Malaysian Police (PDRM) need to monitor office buildings, government offices and factories.
He said there is no denying that there are employers who are negligent in terms of compliance with SOPs among employees, such as check-in, temperature check and wearing face masks.
"The violation of SOP does not only occur in factory areas but there might also be violations in government offices if the authorities carry out inspections there.
"Therefore, a thorough inspection needs to be done by the relevant parties, and they should take strict action against employers who fail to ensure that the SOP is complied with," he said.
Workplace clusters are one of the most widespread Covid-19 clusters in Malaysia.
Employers must play their role
Che Hassan said that employers play a significant role in tackling Covid-19 transmission among workers, especially factory workers.
He added that most factory workers, such as foreign workers, live in hostels or residences provided by employers in overcrowded conditions.
"When they return home, of course, they do not follow the SOP, especially when the employer is indifferent to the cleanliness of the employee's residence.
"They only recorded their body temperature when they went to work, and after that, they mingled freely, especially during meal times. This is the situation that contributed to the occurrence of Covid-19 transmission," he said.
He, who also manages foreign workers at a factory in Kuchai Lama, said his party was bound by the management's strict SOPs to ensure that workers were not infected with Covid-19.
He stated that body temperature checks would be carried out every day when entering work and returning to the hostel, apart from hygiene checks on employees in the hostel.
He added that employers need to be strict in ensuring that employees are disciplined and comply with the SOP at all times.
