Hire NowAccording to research, Small and Medium Enterprises (SME) employees in Malaysia are satisfied with their companies despite the Covid-19 pandemic.
The regional study was jointly conducted by Towers Watson, a global HR advisory firm and Business Media International, the organiser of the SME100 Awards. They found that nine out of 10 Malaysian SME workers believe in their organisation's purpose, mission and vision. The study revealed that:
- The employees trust their leaders and supervisors,
- They are provided with the opportunity to grow, and
- They feel adequately recognised for their contributions.
They conducted the research to provide SMEs with data on their workers amid the pandemic and to raise awareness about the importance of developing a solid employee experience. Other than Malaysia, the researchers also conducted and completed the study earlier in 2021 across Indonesia, Singapore, and Vietnam.
Despite the pandemic, most SME employees are satisfied with their companies.
92% of employees are proud to be part of their companies.
Based on the survey, 92% of respondents said they are proud to be part of their companies. As a result, two out of three have shown interest in staying in their current roles. Meanwhile, three out of five respondents are willing to recommend their company to their friends.
However, the survey also revealed that two out of three Malaysian workers are experiencing high stress levels. The causes of their stress include:
- Concerns around their financial situation,
- Not having the proper support and enablement on a daily basis, and
- Less than ideal working arrangements.
Yeo Ooi Keong, practice leader at Willis Towers Watson, said that their data reveals that the ability to build trust and belief within a company is mainly driven by how connected workers feel towards their leaders.
He added that a leader's ability to communicate a clear direction, empathise, and walk the talk are critical factors that affect a worker's willingness to trust and believe in the company. In turn, it impacts their motivation to improve for the customers and the company as a whole.
Identify issues early to retain employees.
Datuk William Ng, the group publisher of Business Media International and editor-in-chief of SME Magazine, said that SMEs must identify challenges early on as it allows owners to strategise areas of improvement to their business operations and become more effective in attracting and retaining employees.
"It is enlightening to dispel the notion that our SMEs are not up to par when it comes to employee experience. In fact, Malaysia scored higher than our regional peers. However, we do need to empathise more with employees during this pandemic, including watching out for signs of 'burnt out', help employees balance their work and personal commitments and perhaps even provide employees with financial education resources".
