Hire NowMalaysians can look forward to a longer Malaysia Day weekend this year. On 23 July 2025, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim announced that Monday, 15 September 2025, will be an additional public holiday.
This decision extends the Malaysia Day celebration into a four-day weekend from Saturday, 13 September to Tuesday, 16 September 2025 giving Malaysians more time to rest, travel, and reconnect with loved ones. The extra day off complements the official Malaysia Day public holiday on 16 September.
For employers and HR professionals, this announcement brings important updates in terms of compliance, payroll planning, and employee engagement.
Why the Extra Holiday?
The decision aims to:
- Strengthen family bonds with more time for balik kampung trips
- Celebrate national unity and Malaysia Day’s significance
- Support wellness and boost domestic tourism
What Employers Need to Know
Compliance with the Employment Act
Under Section 60D(1) of the Employment Act 1955 (and Sabah/Sarawak ordinances), this holiday is compulsory. Employers must:
- Grant a paid holiday for all employees
- If employees work on Monday, pay them at 2× rate, plus applicable overtime if hours exceed normal working hours
- Offer a replacement day off if they choose not to pay holiday rates
Payroll and Shift Planning
Ensure:
- Systems and rosters reflect 15 September as a holiday.
- Payroll team adjusts for holiday pay or substitute off-days.
- Shift assignments are communicated early, especially in customer-facing roles.
Boost in Employee Well-being & Morale
According to HR Minister Steven Sim, the extended break helps:
- Promote work-life balance and mental well-being
- Encourage family time and local travel
Employers can turn this into a team-building opportunity or wellness initiative.

- Notify staff about pay rates or alternative leave.
- Communicate service coverage plans early if you’re in retail, F&B, or childcare.
- Encourage employees to take advantage—promote local travel or family outings.
The additional holiday on 15 September creates a longer weekend, more rest time, and a chance to celebrate Malaysian unity and wellbeing. HR and payroll teams should ensure pay compliance, system updates, and staff communication to make the most of this opportunity.
