If you are still wondering whether to add video interviews in your hiring effort, here are the pros and cons of using video interview for recruitment.

The pros of video interviews

1. Speed-up the screening process

You save a lot of time by using the video interview method. This new form of recruitment cuts time by eliminating requirements usually found in a face-to-face interview.

2. Lower the cost

  • Making calls is simple, but the interviewer still has to schedule the time to make the call. There's no need to schedule when applicants can send their answers through pre-recorded videos.
  • Hosting an in-person interview can be tough. You need a venue, an administrator, and even refreshments for the candidates. You don't need those with video interviews.
  • You also can't replay a face-to-face interview, but you can rewind and replay video interviews to collect more data about the candidate. Therefore, there is less space for you to hire the wrong candidate.

3. Protects candidates' privacy

During a typical interview, the interviewer controls the session through their questions. By restricting the number of random questions, video interviews make sure the discussion stays on track. Therefore, potentially sensitive topics are less likely to appear thanks to the fast-paced nature of these interviews.

4. Appeals to the old and young

Younger generations were introduced to technology very early in their lives and are more receptive of new tech. By utilising video interviews, your company can gain their attention. The important thing is to appeal to the need for flexibility and quick results. But, we should not forget about the older generation such as Gen X. Some Gen Xs can create videos as skilful as Generation Z'ers.

Face-to-face interviews are becoming rarer, thanks to the current pandemic.

The cons of using video interviews

1. Connectivity issues

Unfortunately, unstable connection is still a prevalent issue during live interviews. The most popular tip is to switch from using Wi-Fi to cable connection as it can offer better stability.

2. Camera stress

Just like in-person interviews, video interviews can be just as stressful. Shyness, or being unfamiliar with the latest technology can discourage both interviewers and candidates alike. Both parties should do a "test run" about 5-10 minutes before the real interview. It can help applicants to be prepared and reduce any potential technical problems.

Through its innovative nature and the necessity created by the recent pandemic, video interview is set to become one of the most important HR trends in the coming times. The future's theme is clear: speed, flexibility, and reliability.
