The Dutch government is encouraging companies to pay people to cycle to work. This is part of its national initiative to fight traffic congestion which is getting worse.

After adding separate cycling paths, the Netherlands now offers tax credits as an incentive for its people to cycle to work. Each Dutch who rides a bicycle to work will receive US$ 0.22 (RM0.90) per kilometre and the best part? It's tax-free.

Known as the 'bicycle nation', the Netherlands has over 22 million bicycles, with more than 17 million residents already using bicycles to go to work. The Country can proudly say that that over a quarter of its population prefer to cycle to work.

The Dutch government believes that such an initiative works in favour of the companies, as the workforce will stay healthy and in shape. This will also reduce absenteeism and naturally increases productivity. But that's not all, these organisations don't have to spend on parking tickets!

Encouraging employees to stay active

There is no other country in the world that offers monetary incentives to people cycling to work and avoiding the use of fossil fuel, but there are other countries that are using different methods to get its population to ride bicycles.

In the United Kingdom, companies buy bicycles and offer them to employees on a lease for a year. The lease amount will be deducted from the employees' monthly salary. This also helps save tax. Those who use their bicycles for business are also qualified for mileage allowance, which is about US$0.26 (RM1.06) per mile.

The Belgian government also offers a similar incentive, as cyclists receive $0.26 (RM1.06) per km. In Luxembourg, employees can get a tax discount of US$340 (RM1,391) if they buy a bicycle.

Companies around the world are also looking for creative ways to encourage its workers to focus on their health by offering special benefits.

In Japan, a company awards its employees who get at least six hours of sleep a night with points worth up to $570 (RM2324) a year. These points can be exchanged for meals at the company’s canteen. Another company gives extra vacation days to its employees who do not smoke, as smoking staff often take smoking breaks.

In the United States, a company has an unlimited vacation policy in order to attract talent and retain its employees.
