Do your employees know what the CEO looks like? Do they even know their name?

According to research in the US, almost a quarter of employees working at mid- and large-sized companies don’t even know their CEO’s name. A survey led by APPrise Mobile revealed shocking findings about communication between executives and their employees.

Here are the findings:

  • 23% said they were not sure of their CEO's name
  • 34% of employees between 18-24 said they were not familiar with the CEO
  • 22% of those over 25 years old said they were not familiar with the CEO
  • 1 out of 3 of surveyed employees said they were not sure if they could identify the CEO in a lineup
  • 54% of employees between 18-24 said they would pass the lineup test.
  • 69% of employees over 25 years old said they would pass the lineup test.
  • 71% of surveyed employees don't work in the same office as their CEO.
  • 2 out 3 said that email is the main form of communication used by the executives at their company

This is sad for the employees, and it is a serious issue for the company. Employers need to spend as much time with their employees as they do with their investors and other stakeholders. Of course, the employees have to make an effort to learn more about their company and its executives.

CEOs should try to socialise with their employees.

Spending time with employees

CEOs are very busy people. They would probably love to spend more time with their workers, but they have no idea where to find the time. First, they need to know just the importance of leaders speaking directly with their employees.

Why? To ensure that the employees can clearly understand the company's vision. Also, they need to make time for these conversations. There are many ways CEOs can spend time with their employees that don't take a lot of time but produce great results. Here are just a few:

  • Organise an office lunch with your employees
  • Celebrate birthdays together
  • Grab a coffee with an employee and have a chat once a while

Employees need to learn more about your company

It is just as important for the employees to learn about their company and its leaders. Your company website should at least have the following:

  • What are the company's products?
  • Who are their competitors?
  • Who are the company executives?
  • Who is on the company's Board of Directors?

Other leaders matter, too

It's also very crucial for employees to know the leaders at other levers in the organisation. Employees are familiar with their immediate supervisor and head of the department. Let them know how important to their career's success to know the heads of the other departments too.

This is vital especially if one wishes to change to a different job in the same company. Not only that, knowing other departments and what they do makes the employee more valuable to employers.

An organisation that knows one another well paves way for a more efficient workplace.

It is necessary for CEOs to get to know their employees. It is equally essential for the employees to recognise their CEOs and other senior leadership.
