Improving your work profile is determined by who you are, your motivation, work environment, working style and work culture. Here are some practical tips to get noticed at the office to help progress your career and achieve your goals.

How to get people to notice you

There are various ways to increase your visibility at the office and enhance your career prospects.

Volunteer to assist with events, join groups or take on extra work. Be eager to help people and gain experience. It will help you get noticed and grow your network. Take on extra work which is above your pay grade. You will acquire skills which will be useful when you apply for a promotion.

Don't be afraid to speak up during meetings. Build your confidence and contribute ideas. The crucial part is to not to talk over others. You can make a positive contribution so others value your input. Long meetings can be tiring, so always check your language, stay open and be attentive. Come in early for meetings and don't be late. Introduce yourself to those you have not met before.

Build relationships with others. involve yourself in informal work events: attending office parties, give birthday cards, join the book club or assist with charity events. Take advantage of networking opportunities.

Recognise achievements and everyone's contributions, including your own. Give credit where it's due, and give yourself some credit too. Accept recognition when someone offers it and avoid false modesty. Don't be afraid to take credit for your work when you deserve it.

With the right attitude, you too can be noticed for your good work

Building your reputation

Building a good reputation in the workplace can improve your work profile and get noticed at work for the right reasons.

  1. Be courteous in your emails. It is easy for people to misread your emails as cold. Being courteous can help you stand out from the rest.

  2. Be considerate. Take the time to understand others' needs and then go the extra mile. Add value to your work by knowing what might be extra helpful for them.

  3. Be timely. Be realistic when agreeing on deadlines, so you're more likely to meet them. Keep people informed about delays so they can manage their expectations. If people find out that you are reliable, they will recommend you to others.

  4. Pay attention to your work quality. Make sure you meet or exceed client's or colleague's requirements and your team's expectations.

  5. Be observant and helpful. Make yourself available to coworkers when they need help. Offer to help someone if they are overworked or in need of help.

  6. Be presentable. Your work will always be most important, but being clean and tidy leaves a good impression.

  7. Suggest improvements. Don't be shy about making work easier and better- but try not to step on others' toes.

Getting noticed at work is not an easy task, but if you keep working on it sooner or later your boss will acknowledge your hard work and positive attitude. In the meantime, don't stop putting in the good work!
