Hire NowThe retail industry vaccination programme (RiVAC) will oversee the vaccination of 105,000 retail sector workers by August 31. The programme will also add four more industrial vaccination centres (PPVIN) in Selangor and Negeri Sembilan.
The Ministry of Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs (KPDNHEP) said the four more PPVIN would be at
-
IOI City Tower, Putrajaya (which will operate starting July 26 until September 13);
-
Centro Mall, Klang, Selangor (July 26 to September 16); and
-
Petaling Jaya Performing Arts Centre, Bandar Utama, Selangor (July 27 until September 20);
-
AEON Mall, Nilai, Negeri Sembilan (date to be announced later).
According to the ministry, the first RiVAC PPVIN is at Mid Valley Exhibition Centre Kuala Lumpur and will start operating from July 26 until September 6. The venue will be able to accommodate about 31,500 vaccine recipients.
The four other PPVINs will each accommodate a maximum capacity of 21,000 recipients throughout the vaccination period.
KPDNHEP urged all retail sector companies to join RiVAC and sign up to get their workers vaccinated as soon as possible. These companies include:
-
Grocery stores,
-
Supermarkets,
-
Petrol stations,
-
Workshops,
-
Restaurants,
-
Hardware stores, and
-
Barbershops.
According to the ministry, it is considering making company-wide vaccination a requirement for approval to operate under the National Recovery Plan (PPN), particularly for economic activities that involve face-to-face communication and close contact.
RiVAC will help the continuation of businesses in the retail sector
Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs Minister Datuk Seri Alexander Nanta Linggi said RiVAC would help the livelihoods of those in the retail sector and the continuation of businesses. He hoped that there would be no delay to the programme, which is scheduled to start on July 26.
"If we don't help them, there will be many more retail businesses being closed down, and their workers become unemployed. That is why we in the ministry firmly urged the authority, the National Security Council (MKN), to give priority to the vaccination programme for retail workers," he said.
RiVAC is a vaccination programme for retail sector companies.

Retail businesses experience heavy drop in sales
Based on a Malaysia Retail Chain Association (MRCA) survey, 91% of retail businesses reported a drop in sales from January to June 2021. The survey measures the impact of current restrictions. Its president Shirley Tan said the survey was conducted among its 450 association members to compare the sales statistics for the first six months in 2020 and 2021.
According to her:
-
45% of the respondents said they experienced more than 30% decline in sales,
-
55% said they had downsized their retail operations, and
-
21% had closed up to six outlets and branches.
-
Around 40% of the members reported they had terminated over ten workers, which means over 50,000 retail workers had been terminated.
-
97% said they only have 4.5 months worth of cash flow to sustain their operations due to the declining sales.
