The hiring process takes a lot of time and money. We cannot just throw away our resources on hiring practices that are not effective. These are the critical bad habits we should avoid and ensure that we can attract and keep the best candidates.

Avoid these five hiring habits!

1. Taking too much time

We understand that it's unwise to rush hiring, but we also can't afford to wait too long to bring new employees into the company. Many organisations lose out on great candidates because of the long gaps in communication. It's essential to connect with your candidates regularly throughout the process to make sure you don’t lose candidates to other hiring companies.

2. Focusing on just one area of expertise

We want to make sure that our applicants have the qualifications and essential skills needed for the job. But we must not concentrate on one are only. Even if our applicant is highly qualified, we must verify that they have the necessary experience in all the areas that matter. Any candidate should be willing and wanting to learn, but you do not want your new hire to struggle or fail during the first few months on the job because of their imbalanced skillsets.

3. Not hiring for cultural fit

Education, skills, and experience are necessary, but the most crucial thing we should consider with applicants is if their personality fits our organisation. Ask yourself these questions:

  • Do their values mirror what our organisation wants to present to the public?
  • Will the candidate get along with your established teams?

Don't forget that criteria when you're conducting the job interview and considering candidates.

Nowadays, it's more important to find suitable employees who can get along and achieve higher productivity together.

4. Not personalising communications.

No applicant wants to receive a form fill template telling them they're moving on in a job interview or that they are no longer being considered for the position. We will connect with more talents if HR can personalise their communications with candidates before and after job interviews.

5. Excluding a pay range in your job ad

Some employers worry that by having a pay range, they will risk alienating certain applicants and attract underqualified candidates instead. The reality is that employers can end up wasting valuable time going through applications of candidates who have different ideas on acceptable salary. Going through the interview process with applicants only to know that they will not accept an offer because of salary can be an infuriating experience. You can save your organisation, your HR team, and your candidates so much time and effort by simply listing your salary range with your job ad.
