Job-hopping is becoming a trend among employees nowadays. What is job-hopping? It's when an employee spends less than two years in a position and switches jobs.

Why is job-hopping so common?

There is one main reason why workers switch jobs. They choose to do what they think they do best. The need to earn more money always affects the decision-making of many employees.

But HR staff must know that most workers hop for one particular reason: When the employee feels enough chances are not being given for them to be at their best.

6 Ways to Handle The Job-Hopping Generation

1. Review your employee engagement

Employee engagement is a popular mantra among many progressive organisations. But what they don't realise is that employee engagement is about the feeling of belongingness that a worker wants to have in the organisation.

Job Hopping is the best instance of the repercussion of employee disengagement in an organisation. These employees jump through opportunities in a range of diversified organisations until they found their employer of choice.

2. Plan retention while hiring

HR staff must look into three things while hiring: culture fit, career development opportunities, and team building. It would be best if you did a total candidate evaluation beyond their qualifications and experience, such as soft skills, industry-specific skills, and long-term career goals.

HR managers must also recognise the transferable skills needed and ensure that they correctly assess the candidate's capabilities in the required skills. It will enable skilled young candidates to find the right job match.

3. Recognition

A recognition could be a short message with a strong takeaway or a public announcement of achievement, or simply a thank you note. In short, any recognition will work. It can be praise, gratitude, or a positive employer-employee relationship. Employees will stay if they feel valued.

Employers must do more to ensure that employees will remain loyal to them.

4. Build meaningful relationships

An employer should create meaningful relationships with their employees in the workplace. Give your employees a genuine reason to stay with you. Sixty per cent of employees would be more likely to stick with their boss if they had more friends in the organisation.

5. Provide a work-life balance

If the employer does not offer work-life balance, most workers know that another organisation would. The new generation of employees is particularly looking for a job more associated with their core principles, passion, and work-life balance.

6. Improve your feedback process

Employee feedback is a vital necessity to stay on track with the desired growth and development. Schedule recurring feedback sessions with your workers. Continual feedback can help employees track their career progress and build personal connections.

How has Job-Hopping Changed In 2020?

With the new generation jumping onto the job sector now, things have changed a lot. The negative stigma attached to job hopping is steadily decreasing. Nowadays, there are three things that employees want: career growth, community, and cause.

Short-term positions have become more common. The new generation is always looking for better opportunities in terms of knowledge and job positions.

However, candidates who change jobs only for the sake of a higher salary should not take unfair advantage of this change in perception.
